Development of a SIOFA scientific observer data collection manual

The SIOFA Scientific Committee (SC) is tasked to provide fisheries management advice to the SIOFA Meeting of the Parties (MoP). In recent years, SIOFA implemented a series of projects and workshops which contributed to the harmonization of the observer framework. Project SEC2022-OBS1 (2024) constituted the backbone of these efforts, producing observer logbook forms and recommendations which were picked up in workshop WS2024-OBS (2024) and workshop WS2024-OBS2 (2024). These efforts culminated in a dense observer-related agenda item at the 10th annual meeting of the SIOFA SC (2025).

Assessment of SIOFA Species and Ecosystems for vulnerability to climate change impacts

The SIOFA Scientific Committee (SC) is tasked to provide fisheries management advice to the SIOFA Meeting of the Parties (MoP). In recent years, both the SC and the MoP have agreed to have a standing agenda item at their annual meeting dealing with climate change. The SIOFA SC discussed climate change during its 9th annual meeting, in 2024 (see paragraphs 399–407 of the SC9 report). The SIOFA SC also discussed climate change at the following meeting, in 2025, when it was first added as a specific item to its agenda (see paragraphs 545–552 of the SC10 report).

The purpose of the workshop will be for the consultants to present methods and project plans for the three main projects of SIOFA-PAM and for the Scientific Committee and PAM reviewers to provide feedback on the development of these projects. The projects are:
1. PAM-2024-01: Development of the SIOFA Precautionary Approach Framework
2. PAM-2024-02: Determination of Biological Reference Points (BRPs) for key SIOFA fish stocks
3. PAM-2024-03: Development of Harvest Strategies for key SIOFA fish stocks
