About the Regional Technical Seminar and the Call for Action

The three-day event was organized by FAO, the Apostleship of the Sea, in collaboration with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), IMO, ILO and the UNODC. The meeting is a follow-up to the recommendations from 3rd Joint FAO/IMO Ad Hoc Working Group on IUU Fishing and Related Matters (JWG).

The meeting counted with the participation of 38 specialists from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) region (Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Réunion (France), Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania. Participants included different government agencies (fisheries, labour, maritime), trade unions, national human rights institutions, faith-based organizations and small-scale fishers organizations.

After a first day of presentation on international legal instruments on safety, working conditions and responsible fisheries, participants worked together to identify priority areas for the West Indian Ocean region and adopted a Call for Action, dubbed Mahé Call for Action.
